What is chair massage?
Chair massage is a focused massage that offers the back, neck and shoulders much deserved, undivided attention. It is simply a massage performed with the client seated, while clothed, in a portable massage chair.
Benefits
The benefits of chair massage are remarkable for the brief duration of the massage. It is a great way to take a break from everything. This brief massage improves circulation and mental awareness while thoroughly relaxing the client.
Additionally, it is the perfect mid-day getaway to relieve neck or back pain, headaches, and tension in the shoulders or any area of the back. If the wrists are worked, even temporary relief from carpal tunnel syndrome is possible.
Chair massage is also a wonderful treat after a stressful meeting, flight, or other event where you have to sit for long periods of time and merely wish to unwind.
What to expect
You will remain clothed for this massage. Generally, your therapist will ask you to sit on a portable massage chair that has been designed specifically for your comfort.
Straddling the seat, you will sit and face the massage chair. Then, you’ll lean forward, into the face cradle and against the chair’s chest pad. Folding your legs into a kneeling position (if you can), you will rest them on top of the shin pads.
Your massage therapist will massage your back, neck and shoulders, often using deeper pressure. Tell them if it is uncomfortable. Many times, the therapist will also massage the arms, hands and scalp.
After your massage and how often to have a chair massage
After your mini massage, you will feel refreshed and revived. Drink plenty of water to flush out any toxins that were released and stay relaxed for the rest of the day.
This type of massage is such an easy, fast and economical way to reduce stress. We suggest you have one as often as possible or whenever you feel you need to have the tension worked out of your back, neck and shoulders.
This is a great fix, but make time sooner than later to treat the whole body to a great massage. The body all works as one unit. For example, often the root of back pain actually stems from the feet.
Average cost and where to get one
The cost of chair massage is minimal for the amount of relief that can be achieved in just a few minutes. If you are paying for it, expect to pay (on average) a dollar a minute. When paying for it, you have more control over how long it lasts. Many places, however, will limit the maximum time to twenty minutes.
If the massage is free, such as at an event, your massage may only last a few minutes. Either way, it will be well worth your time.
This mini-massage has become much more popular over the past few years. It is much easier to locate a place where you can take a few minutes to relax on a whim. Typical locations include airports, malls, events and certain retail outlets.
In addition, many corporations have realized the value in treating their staff to a corporate chair massage. In such instances, they may set up an employee appreciation day or include the massage in a health fair. These chair massages are then free to the employees and the corporation pays the massage therapist a set fee.
