What is pregnancy massage (maternity massage)?
Pregnancy massage (maternity massage or prenatal massage) is a massage for an expecting mother. Much like a Swedish massage, maternity massage provides a stress-relieving experience.
Benefits of maternity massage
Pregnancy and massage can both do wonders for a woman. After her first trimester, an expecting mother may finally indulge in an hour of this specialized relaxation. However, please refrain from receiving a full body, pre-natal massage during the first trimester.
Changes that occur in a woman’s life and body can be overwhelming during pregnancy. And this is especially true for new mothers. Stress levels rise, giving her more to deal with. But, through massage, that stress will dissipate.
The comfort provided by the maternity massage can settle the nerves and ease tension in the lower back.
Every woman is different and so is her pregnancy. Use caution and consult your doctor before receiving any body services during your pregnancy. While booking your massage, make sure the therapist is trained in maternity massage.
What to expect during a pregnancy massage
For a pregnancy massage, you will disrobe and lie as comfortably as you can on the massage table. Many establishments have special cushions for expecting mothers. If so, there will be a pregnancy cushion on top of the table. Whenever you see that, your massage will start with you laying face down, positioned on top of the cushion.
Not to worry though, as there is an elevated face cradle and support for your body. In addition, the form’s cutouts allow for the breasts and abdominal region, so you can rest comfortably.
If a cushioned form is not available, your massage therapist will improvise for your comfort. Depending on how far along you are, you may be comfortable laying on your back. If so, you will probably start out in that position.
If not (and when it comes time to massage your back), you will rest on your side. Using pillows or extra towels for support, the therapist will continue with the pre natal massage. However, wrists, ankles and portions of the thighs will not be massaged. Some therapists may avoid the hands and feet altogether.
After your treatment and how often to have a maternity massage
After your maternity massage, be sure to drink plenty of water. And of course, enjoy the opportunity to relax, because after your baby is born, you’ll have to work to find time to enjoy this kind of relaxation again!
We suggest that you receive this massage as often as your doctor recommends and your time allows.
On a side note, a gentle, safe, newborn chiropractic adjustment is the perfect way to welcome your baby into the world. Additionally, on your own time (and to relieve baby’s digestive issues), treat your baby to infant massage on a regular basis.
